Why we freak out about some technologies

Highline 73

I saw this post from Clive Thompson on Wired today (via @drkeir on Twitter):

Why We Freak Out About Some Technologies but Not Others

It is an interesting read and Clive refers to the three rules (to provoke moral panic) of one of our InfoOnline keynote speakers Genevieve Bell.

I’m just back from a visit to NYC and I walked the Highline, taking the photo above of 245 Tenth Ave by Della Valle Bernheimer (architects). It is the only new building that has been allowed to “hang” over the Highline, an old disused railway line in lower west-side Manhattan that has been resurrected by the community and found a new life well beyond its original purpose. Maybe there is a moral somewhere there for some of us?
